Ruby Trip - 2013

Day 5 - Saturday - July 20

The old house
The day was grey and cloudy.  Grandpa went outside to work on his new house for a while and promptly, out of the habit of living by himself, and without thinking, locked us in the house.  We hollered and finally knocked on the door to make Thorak, my dad's dog, bark and finally gained Grandpa's attention to let us out.
Not much happened during the day, other than getting a load of laundry done.

Charlie and his barge showed up that evening.

Petey takes a ride on a forklift
Charlie's little dog, Petey, use to the motion and bustle of large machinery moving, loading, and unloading supplies from the barge ran around and occasionally hopped on the smaller loader for a ride.  If it were my dog, I'd be near a heart-attack.

Later we all helped with a little more work on my dad's house.

Day 4 - Friday - July 19

Still raining in the morning.  My dad and I went for a fast mosquito infested walk between rain showers.

The Elite Bath

Jesse developed a bit of cabin fever by noon and so we braved the rain to get a few pictures of the older buildings in Ruby.

On our walk we also discovered that the boat motor became stuck in the mud when the river rose over night.

Later in the evening the rain slowed and stopped, Roy came over and he and the boys helped ready and raise a wall on the new house my dad is building.

By bed time the sun was shining exceptionally bright through the windows as if to taunt everyone.

Day 3 - Thursday - July 18

Brandon woke up earlier today and we went out the road further than 3 1/2 mile to pick mushrooms with Grandpa.

The mosquitoes were especially thick and the mushrooms were already getting 'buggy'.

What we did get was good and once it was fried up with bacon and potatoes  Brandon, who doesn't like mushrooms, actually ate a few bites.  Jesse only tried one bite.

Brandon broke his hatchet he made and had to repair it.

Roy came down with some old newspapers or magazines printed in 1961 and 1962, called Grit, that he found in an old cabin.

Since it was raining by the evening, we watched the next two parts (Part 3 & 4) of the series Centennial (James A. Michener).

Day 2 - Wednesday - July 17

Brandon slept for most the day, finally rolling out of bed around 12 O'Clock.  By than Jesse and I had already taken another walk around town.

We were waiting for groceries that I had sent out the Friday of the previous week but it still had not come in.

In the evening we had Brandon's salmon for dinner and Roy brought a truck down so we could take a drive around the town and see what we could see.  We drove out to 3 1/2 mile, looked at the construction going on at the school at the top of the hill, and looked at a cabin that is for sale in Ruby.   It was time for Roy to eat dinner so I told him we could walk back home from where he is staying.

Later in the evening, Brandon built a hatchet and mini-spear from rocks and sticks.

Day 1 - Tuesday - July 16

It was Jesse's first plane ride.  He took some video and we both took a few pictures.

Brandon, who is the 'world traveler' of the family and being use to plane rides by now, mostly slept under his jacket.

When we finally reached Ruby, only 1 1/2 hours later, we were met by Roy and my dad at the airport.

The boys and I took a walk around town and that evening Roy took us across the Yukon River  to do some pike and she-fish fishing.

However, Brandon caught a small salmon known as a chum or dog salmon.
